Staphylococcus lugdunensis carrying the mecA gene causes catheter-associated bloodstream infection in premature neonate.

A premature neonate had a catheter-associated bloodstream infection due to Staphylococcus lugdunensis. The MIC of oxacillin for the strain was >256 microg/ml, and the mecA gene of S. lugdunensis was detected by PCR. The infection was resolved after removal of the line and treatment with vancomycin for 2 weeks.

First Record of Isolation and Characterization of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis from Clinical Samples in Iraq

This study was conducted to determine the frequency of Staphylococcus lugdunensis in different clinical samples. Out of 690 clinical samples, a total of 178 coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolates were recovered. CoNS were identified as 10 different species; 22 isolates belonged to Staphylococcus lugdunensis. Two specific genes for S. lugdunensis were used (tanA gene and fbl gene) to c...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis carrying SCCmec type V misidentified as MRSA.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a rare cause of severe infections and clinical manifestations are similar to those related to S. aureus infection. We describe a hospital-acquired bacteremia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis, misidentified as methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The oxacillin MIC was 16 µg/mL and the mecA gene and SCCmec type V were determined by PCR. Although tr...

Catalase-negative Staphylococcus lugdunensis strain with a novel point mutation in the catalase gene isolated from a patient with chronic suppurative otitis media.

This report describes the results of the sequence analysis of a methicillin-susceptible strain of catalase-negative Staphylococcus lugdunensis. Molecular characterization of the deduced sequence revealed a novel point mutation in the catalase gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a catalase-negative S. lugdunensis strain, although catalase-negative isolates of Staphylococcus aureu...

Detection Of Methicillin Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus By Disk Diffusion And PCR Methods

Background and Objective: Methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus is an increasingly important clinical problem. A chromosomal gene, mecA, mediates resistance to penicillinase-resistant penicillins such as methicillin and oxacillin in Staphylococcus aureus. We evaluated the validity of disk diffusion test by using oxacillin, methicillin an...
